عوامی
Public, popular, relating to the people, belonging to the masses, or pertaining to the general population. The word عوامی is an adjective derived from the Arabic root "ع و م" (ain waw meem), which means to swim, to float, or to be common. The noun "عام" (aam) means common, general, or public. The plural "عوام" (awaam) means the common people, the masses, or the public. The suffix "ی" (i) turns the noun into an adjective meaning "pertaining to the public". In Urdu, عوامی is used to describe things that are for the people, that belong to the people, that are accessible to the people, or that are characteristic of the people. It is used in political discourse, in social commentary, in journalism, in public policy, in entertainment (public events), and in everyday conversation about things that are popular or common. The word is masculine and feminine; it does not change for gender. You would say "یہ عوامی ہے" meaning this is public, using the masculine pronoun یہ. For a feminine noun, you would say "یہ عوامی خدمت ہے" (this is a public service), still using عوامی.
